What Is Antenatal Care?
Antenatal care — also called prenatal care — is the medical attention and health monitoring a woman receives during pregnancy. The goal is to ensure the well-being of both the mother and the developing baby through regular check-ups, screenings, and health education.
Proper antenatal care helps detect and manage complications early, prepares mothers for labour and delivery, and gives babies the best possible start in life. Starting your antenatal care early — ideally in your first trimester — is highly recommended.
What Our Antenatal Care Includes
First Trimester (Weeks 1–12)
Your first visit will include a full health history review, blood tests (blood group, haemoglobin, HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B), an early ultrasound scan to confirm the pregnancy and check the baby’s heartbeat, and nuchal translucency screening for Down syndrome risk.
Second Trimester (Weeks 13–26)
This stage includes an anomaly scan at 20 weeks to check baby’s anatomy, glucose tolerance testing for gestational diabetes, monitoring of blood pressure, weight, and fundal height, and discussion of birth planning options.
Third Trimester (Weeks 27–40)
More frequent check-ups to monitor baby’s growth, position, and movements. We assess readiness for labour, discuss pain management options, and prepare your birth plan. GBS screening is done at 36 weeks.
High-Risk Pregnancy Care in Nairobi
Some pregnancies require closer monitoring and specialist care. At Nur Fertility, Dr. Mwaniki is experienced in managing high-risk pregnancies including:
- Gestational diabetes
- Pregnancy-induced hypertension and pre-eclampsia
- Multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets)
- Pregnancies following IVF or assisted reproduction
- Placenta praevia or placental abruption
- Thyroid disorders in pregnancy
- Previous preterm birth or recurrent miscarriage
- Advanced maternal age (over 35)
IVF pregnancies need specialist antenatal care. If you conceived through IVF or IUI, your pregnancy is classified as high-risk and benefits from closer monitoring throughout. Dr. Mwaniki can seamlessly transition your care from fertility treatment to antenatal care.
Postnatal Care at Nur Fertility
Our care does not stop at delivery. We offer postnatal check-ups to monitor your recovery after birth, support with breastfeeding, screening for postnatal depression, and advice on contraception after childbirth. Your health continues to matter to us long after your baby arrives.
Preconception Care — Before You Get Pregnant
Planning a pregnancy? Preconception care helps you prepare your body before conception, improve your chances of a healthy pregnancy, and identify any health issues that could affect you or your baby. We offer preconception screening including blood tests, nutritional guidance, folic acid supplementation advice, and a review of any medications you are taking.
Antenatal Care FAQs
When should I book my first antenatal appointment?
You should book as soon as you know you are pregnant — ideally before 10 weeks. Early booking allows us to complete important first-trimester screenings and establish your baseline health profile.
How many antenatal appointments will I need?
For a normal pregnancy, you will typically have 8–12 appointments spread across the three trimesters. High-risk pregnancies may require more frequent visits. Dr. Mwaniki will plan your schedule at your first appointment.
Does Nur Fertility accept insurance for antenatal care?
We work with a number of insurance providers in Kenya. Please contact us in advance to confirm whether your specific plan covers antenatal care at Nur Fertility Centre. We can provide the documentation your insurer requires.
